Do you want to get or just got a Basenji and want to know how long do Basenji puppies grow? You are in the right place. In this article, we are going to answer as many questions as you might have about your Basenji pup.
Basenjis are mid-sized dogs and will grow for 12 months to full maturity. They stand at 18 to 20 inches in height and about 23-25 inches in length. When they are born, they can be of various sizes depending on the litter size. Basenjis usually have litters of 4 to 5 puppies.
Where are Basenjis From?
Basenjis are originally from The Congo in Africa and were used for thousands of years as hunting dogs. They were used for hunting game as well as for hunting lions. They actually have a reputation, in some parts of Africa, as lion hunters.
They are generally comfortable in warmer climates but don’t do so well in colder climates. They have very short fur and though they shade, they do not shade as much as most dogs which makes them a good pet for people with allergies.
They are believed to be a cross between wolf and coyote species which went extinct hundreds if not thousands of years ago.
They have a high prey drive meaning that they are inclined to hunt which has somewhat contributed to the reputation they have received of not being able to get along with cats. Their average lifespan is anywhere from 10 to 14 years.

How Long Will a Basenji Live?
Basenji will have a lifespan of between 10 to 14 years. This is how long you can expect to have your faithful companion with you. If you have young kids, they can enjoy time with the Basenji well into their teens.
Basenji are very good family dogs and tend to get along very well with their families and for the large part, will get along well with other dogs as well as cats which are part of the family. If they do not have other pets like cats within the family, they are more inclined to turn to their hunter instinct.
They can main or even kill your neighbour’s cat who happens to stray into your yard. They do have a high prey drive.
Basenji are very clean dogs and groom themselves in the same manner that a cat would groom itself. Because of this, you don’t need to bathe them as often as you would other dogs. They are also great apartment dogs even though they are a bit difficult to train.
Basenji are hunting dogs instinctively and pretty much have a mind of their own and pick when to and not to obey you.
